Science has not yet managed to find a good scientific explanation for why some rocks sing. Various theories have been presented, but none of them have provided a good enough explanation for the phenomenon. The most common theory is that the singjar stones consist of a special mineral or a specific collection of minerals. This theory falls through as these stones consist of very many, and different, rock types.

Throughout history, man has searched for explanations for natural phenomena, events and formations. Legends and legends have been passed down from generation to generation, and are an important part of our cultural heritage. There have been many stories of singing stones luring people. Other stories tell of elves and forest folk who live inside these stones, and who make them sing.

Maybe it's really just a little bit of magic?

The singing stone at Skåra

The stone is located on the farm Skåra, approx. three km from the center of Egersund and was found purely by chance by a former farmer on the farm.

The singjar stone measures 110 x 155 cm, and is approx. 70 cm high. Like many bell stones, a piece of it was once broken off, to determine if it contained metal. The stone is located directly on the mountain, with which it has good contact in the middle. The shape is oval, and the stone ends in a point out into the air on one side. The sound is the best here, even if it has reverberation throughout. The stone has two different notes (F# and G#).

When you come from Egersund, follow Heggdalsveien for 2.2 kilometres, and turn off Skåraveien on the left, at the sign "0.7 Hestesenter". Drive all the way to the innermost yard, where there is parking by the stables. From the farm, follow the tractor road eastwards for 300 metres, and then the Syngjarsteinen is on top of a hill on the right, about 100 meters from the tractor road.
