Geology and nature

Due to the exceptional geology of the area, Magma Geopark boasts a colorful mining history. At Blåfjell, "The Blue Mountain," up to eight mines were active during the 19th century. Here, you can see the old mines surrounded by picturesque landscapes and cultural scenery. Ilmenite extraction took place at Blåfjell from 1863 to 1876, with a total of 90,000 tons of ore exported during these years.

Mineralet ilmenitt er et viktig råmateriale for produksjon av titandioksid. Titandioksid brukes som et hvitt pigment i maling, plast og papir, men også som en ingrediens i kosmetiske produkter, inkludert solkrem og sminke, samt i medisin og til og med som tilsetningsstoff i noe mat – der det er kjent som E171. En jernbane ble bygd mellom Blåfjell og Rekefjord for å transportere malmen til kysten for shipping videre til kontinentet. Denne gamle jernbanen er nå en tur- og sykkelsti omkranset av imponerende natur.

The area consists of many small lakes, a river and beautiful valleys surrounded by steep mountains. It is located near Hauge in Dalane in Sokndal municipality and is open to the public. The mines can only be visited with specialized guides.

How to get there?

From Hauge in Dalane, follow the signs south to Linepollen. Park in the marked parking space on the right. Follow the marked path.

Accessibility: Easy to medium hike. Divorced. Marked road. Prams can be used right up to the mine.

Duration: 1-3 hours.

Show consideration:

Parks in the parking lot, and show respect for the private land.
Pay attention to the animals along the route.
Remember to close gates behind you.
Dogs must be on a leash.
Leave only footprints!
