Rosslandsguden

Old sculpture of Rosslandsguden in Sokndal. Easy trip, 0.5 hours.

Culture and history

The Rossland god is a figure of a man's head, which is carved from a local rock (ilmenite norite). It is about 60 cm high. Its origin and age are highly controversial, but experts today believe that the head is prehistoric. The original Rosslandsguden was brought to Dalane Folkemuseum in 1910 and is now on display at Jøssingfjord Vitenmuseum for the enjoyment of the public.

Rossland in Sokndal municipality is generally a rich cultural heritage area that may have been a cultural site in the old Iron Age, and is also interpreted in the context of the pre-Christian fertility cult.
