Challenging hike in Bjerkreim, two options: 1.5 and 3 hour tour

Geology and nature

Ramnafjellet is a popular area for hiking, and when you climb to the top you get a beautiful view of Bjerkreim municipality. At Åsen you are in the lower part of Western Europe's largest layered intrusion. 920 million years ago, this was a huge magma chamber full of glowing magma – more than 100 times hotter than boiling water. Ramnafjellet consists of large inclusions of anorthosite inside this magma chamber. As anorthosite is more resistant than the rocks that enclose these inclusions, Ramnafjellet has been formed.

Culture and history

The oldest house in Bjerkreim, Åsen, can be found in this area. The hill got its name from the area in which it stands; a hill. The house has been modernized and is used for various events in Bjerkreim. Åsen has a long history as a regular stopping place along the church road, and priests have stopped there regularly in the period from 1400 - 1900. The farm is nicely located close to several hiking trails and there is a great salmon river just 5 minutes' drive from Åsen.

How to get there?

There are two different routes to Åsen; one starts from Bjerkreim church (3 hour round trip) and one goes up from Åsen (1.5 hour round trip).

• To start the tour from the church, follow the E39 to Bjerkreim all the way to the car park by the church. Park here and follow the signs and marked path to Åsen.
