A UNESCO Global Geopark is a defined geographical area with a geological heritage of international significance. A geopark focuses on the relationship between geology, nature, and culture.
Development of sustainable tourism based on this is an important task closely linked to local development. Another fundamental task is communication and teaching – to schools, local people and visitors.
All UNESCO Global Geoparks work with the UN's sustainability goals.
UNESCO is the UN's organization for education, science and culture.
A UNESCO recognition is given to the geopark for 4 years at a time. Every 4 years, an evaluation is carried out which determines whether the UNESCO status is renewed. A UNESCO Global Geopark is therefore constantly in development.
