Hellersheia - the view is worth the effort

Nature and geology

The Hellersheia plateau consists of massive anorthosite with clear traces of the Ice Age. The hike up to the Hellersheia plateau contains some demanding parts, but the view is worth the effort.

This area is part of the Åna-Sira anorthosite, one of several large anorthosite areas in Rogaland. The landscape on the plateau is dominated by the majestic mountains, clear lakes and large boulders scattered about. These boulders were transported by glaciers that spread over the area and were left behind when the ice melted. You can also find circular potholes on the plateau. These were formed from pebbles that swirled around in running water at the end of the ice age about 10,000 years ago. You may notice that some of the surfaces have near-horizontal scratches, known as scuff marks. These were made from blocks of stone that were carried in the ice as it moved.
