Train to Hellvik

Short, evocative and full of changing landscapes

The train journey from Egersund to Hellvik is short, but full of the classic scenery that characterises the area: rolling moors, bare mountains, small lakes and glimpses of the sea. As the train follows the new railway line, you'll also get a sense of the region's history, from the first railway developments in the 1870s to the expansion of the Sørlandsbanen in the 1940s. The journey builds up anticipation for what lies ahead: a full day on foot through one of Norway's most distinctive coastal landscapes.

Walk the old Jærbanen railway - one of the region's most beautiful hiking routes

Easy terrain, varied nature and rich railway history

This 7-8 kilometre hike is one of the region's most popular, and not without reason. The trail follows the original route of the Jær Railway from the 1800s and runs through open moorland, sheltered woodland and dramatic coastal formations. Along the way it follows the railway wagons that once rolled towards Egersund. The landscape is constantly changing, from quiet little lakes inland to wide views of the coast. The trip is calm and varied, suitable for most people, and offers many nice places to sit down and enjoy the view from Symre.

Alternative: Nordra Sundet round - a real taste of Jæren

Rugged coastline, small sandy bays and views in all directions

If you're ready for a slightly longer hike, the 10-kilometre round trip at Nordra Sundet offers weathered rocks, small bays, sand dunes and great viewpoints. The area is well marked and organised with campfire sites, shelters, toilets and nice places to take a break, making the trip both comfortable and adventurous. This is the hike for those who want to experience the raw beauty that surrounds Egersund up close.

Walk to Eigerøy lighthouse - iconic coastal geology

Moon-like bedrock, rolling coastal landscape and a family-friendly tour

Eigerøy lighthouse is located at the end of a beautiful 4.6 kilometre hike through a landscape shaped by anorthosite - the rare rock that gives Magma Geopark its UNESCO status. The open terrain, rolling rocky hills and expansive views of the North Sea give a strong sense of space and freedom. The trail is partly on gravel roads and partly on marked hiking trails, and is suitable for most families. Along the way you'll pass grazing animals, coastal vegetation and a bird station that monitors migratory birds throughout the year. Arriving at the lighthouse is a highlight in itself, with one of the best views in the entire region.
