About UNESCO Global Geoparks

What is Magma UNESCO Global Geopark?

Magma UNESCO Global Geopark, with its unique geology, is one of over 200 UNESCO Global Geoparks around the world. Magma UNESCO Global Geopark consists of the municipalities of Bjerkreim, Eigersund, Flekkefjord, Lund and Sokndal

UNESCO Global Geoparks are areas of outstanding geological heritage, where landscapes and nature tell the story of the Earth's development over millions of years. They combine the conservation of natural and cultural heritage with communication, local pride and sustainable development.

Today, there are 241 UNESCO Global Geoparks spread across 51 countries around the world.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are members of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN), an international collaboration that shares knowledge, develops good practices, and promotes natural and cultural heritage globally.

In addition, the geoparks are organized into regional networks. In Europe, the geoparks are gathered in the European Geopark Network (EGN), which strengthens cooperation, knowledge exchange and sustainable development across European geoparks.

Magma UNESCO Global Geopark is a proud member of both GGN and EGN.
