The good life in Sokndal

You are welcomed to coastal culture, listed wooden buildings, salmon rivers, inland lakes, the sea, signposted hiking trails in fantastic nature and much more. There are no tourists here - only guests!

Sokndal is located between the towns of Flekkefjord and Egersund on the south-west coast of Norway. Here you'll find the towns of Hauge i Dalane (Haua), Åna-Sira, Jøssingfjord, Sogndalstrand, Rekefjord and Nesvåg.

In Sokndal, we focus on quality of life, identity and hospitality. You are welcomed to coastal culture, listed wooden buildings, salmon rivers, inland lakes, the sea, marked hiking trails in fantastic nature and much more. The mining company Titania is the municipality's cornerstone company with around 240 employees. This is the world's largest ilmenite ore deposit and is operated as an open-cast mine. Otherwise, Sokndal has a varied business community with a number of smaller companies.

Accommodation is available at cultural hotels, campsites and private cabins/houses. The municipal centre of Hauge in Dalane has a number of shops that are known for their good service.
Jøssingfjord Science Museum - a centre where natural and cultural history meet - has recently opened. The theme is: Nature, people and technology. Fantastic hiking opportunities in a number of marked hiking trails. Tellenes Wind Farm was established in 2017 and the country's most complete motorsport centre, Motorcenter Norway, recently opened.

We work actively to create new jobs. Modern school and full kindergarten coverage. A new, modern playground and skate park in the centre of town. Sports facilities with football pitches, tennis court, frisbee golf course, sand volleyball, ball pit, sports hall and climbing frame.

Cittaslow Sokndal

Sokndal was the first municipality in the Nordic region to join Cittaslow, an international movement that began in Italy in 1999. The idea is to slow down the rush, slow down the pace and prioritise quality of life and the good life. In Sokndal, you're allowed to be different and a little crazy.

We've buried the law of jealousy, we have our own Love Week and we focus on intimate things. There are no tourists here - only guests!
Feel free to visit one or more of the other Nordic Cittaslow municipalities: Kristinestad in Finland, Svendborg and Mariager in Denmark, Djúpivogur in Iceland and Ulvik in Norway. More information can be found on Facebook: Cittaslow Nordic Network.

Magma Geopark

The geology of Sokndal and Dalane is special and has resulted in a characteristic landscape. Geological processes between 935 and 920 million years ago have left a special geological legacy that cannot be found anywhere else. Geological resources in the form of ore veins have resulted in the establishment of the mining company Titania.
Magma UNESCO Global Geopark is a geographical area with a geology of international significance, recognised by UNESCO and where sustainable development plays a very important role. Although the background of a geopark is geology, geoparks are first and foremost about people - both locals and visitors, who are interested in exploring, experiencing and sharing the endless possibilities of both nature and culture in a geopark. There are as many as 46 geological and cultural locations in the region for you to explore!
