Galleri Gulbrandsen is beautifully located in the northern part of Kirkegt.56 in a listed building from 1820, which over the years has gone from being a mansion to, among other things, a bank, town hall and library, and now as a gallery for one of Norway's most original artists. If you love colour, art, the eccentric, the larger-than-life and the out-of-the-box, head to Galleri Gulbrandsen! We promise you a colourful and enjoyable experience.
Gulbrandsen is represented by two exhibitions. One is permanent, and a visualisation in images and objects from his work, his home, and his unorthodox life. The other exhibition is dedicated to Gulbrandsen's work, and is currently showing a small selection of paintings from his different eras.
He has come home
Not everyone realises it, but Flekkefjord has its own museum for the artist Lars Kristian Gulbrandsen, or Tatjana as he also called himself. Gallery Gulbrandsen, which is located in Kirkegaten 56, close to the Town Hall and Byggeskikksenteret, opened in November 2021 and is a rare explosion of colour. Just like the artist himself was.
Colourful personality with many facets - Tatjana Lars Kristian Gulbrandsen (born 26 November 1931, died 2 July 2005) was a Norwegian visual artist who spent much of his active life living on Hidra in Flekkefjord. In addition to being represented in Queen Sonja's art collection, he bequeathed most of it (more than 1,000 works) to Flekkefjord along with his home Gloarbu. He appeared in women's clothing and used face paint.
A life lived in colour
Gulbrandsen's unique sense of colour and aesthetics is on display in the elegant and sensational exhibition of his possessions and collections. It is a pleasure and a great inspiration to be able to wander around the premises and absorb something of the worldly person Tatiana Lars Kristian Gulbrandsen represented in both his life and work.
Collaboration and local engagement
Galleri Gulbrandsen is based on a collaboration between Flekkefjord Municipality, Flekkefjord Art Association and Vest-Agder Museum. Flekkefjord Kunstforening also has its own exhibition on the ground floor of the building. Gulbrandsen's own art is exhibited here, as well as art by other artists organised by Flekkefjord Kunstforening.
Two exhibitions in one
In other words, Gulbrandsen is represented by two exhibitions. One is permanent, and a visualisation in images and objects from his work, his home and his unorthodox life. This exhibition is curated by the county's exhibition architect and designer Marita G. Cappelen. The second exhibition varies between showing Gulbrandsen's own works, or works from artists inspired by him. Flekkefjord Kunstforening is an important partner and contributor to Galleri Gulbrandsen. The art association is the curator of the gallery's changing exhibition.
