Eigerøy lighthouse

Eigerøy lighthouse was built in 1853–54 and is one of Europe's strongest and Norway's first cast iron lighthouse. A trip to Eigerøy lighthouse and accommodation in a lighthouse keeper's accommodation is perfect for those who want to enjoy nature in peace and quiet.

The lighthouse was built in modules at Bærums Verk, and transported to Eigerøy and assembled there. The lighthouse is 32.9 m high and there are 134 steps to the lantern. Since this is Norway's first cast iron lighthouse and it was uncertain whether it was heavy enough to withstand the weather and wind, the lighthouse was lined inside with 70,000 bricks.

The lighthouse was automated in 1989. In 1998, the fyrstasjonen protected under the cultural heritage act. The protection includes buildings, roads, and an area around the fyrstasjonen.

Geology and nature

The rock formation in the landscape consists of anorthosite, which formed deep within the Earth approximately 930 million years ago. Anorthosite is a rare rock on Earth, but everyone has seen it – it's actually anorthosite that you see when you look at the bright areas on the moon.

Eigerøy bird station was established at Eigerøy lighthouse in 1991. The initiative was taken by the Norwegian Ornithological Association, but today it is the Dalane local association that manages the first station's hobby house. The station records everything that is seen by birds on Midtbrødøya all year round.
