One route. Three different journeys.

This round trip follows Norwegian Scenic Route Jæren and continues inland through Magma UNESCO Global Geopark, connecting historic wooden towns, island communities and dramatic mountain landscapes. The journey begins with ferry arrival in Kristiansand and leads west and south through Flekkefjord, Hidra, Sogndalstrand, Egersund and Byrkjedal.

The route is designed to be flexible and can be explored in three ways:

Each stop offers suggested day programmes, optional activities and time to slow down, making the journey as much about shared moments as about moving from place to place.

Summary – What you’ll discover along the route

In this area, you can experience geology of international importance, recognized by UNESCO, as well as Three Historical Wooden Towns, stunning coastal scenery and vibrant culture. The distinctive lunar-like landscape is due to a rare rock type – anorthosite, which is the same type of rock found on the moon.

Flekkefjord: Home to The Dutch Town, Flekkefjord’s historic quarter shaped by centuries of trade with the Netherlands. White wooden houses, canalside streets and merchant history meet contemporary street art, with murals turning the old town into an open-air gallery. The town also offers easy access to Hidra, rail biking on the old Flekkefjord railway and seaside sauna experiences.
Sogndalstrand: A protected tiny town where time seems to stand still, with historic sea houses, wooden homes and a calm rhythm between river and sea. Art, culture and dramatic coastal scenery, including nearby Jøssingfjord, add depth to this living piece of history.
Egersund: One of Norway’s best-preserved wooden towns, known for its colourful streets, rich cultural history and lively harbour. Short hikes, museums, local food and panoramic viewpoints are all close at hand.
Byrkjedal: A dramatic inland landscape shaped by ice and rock, with waterfalls, scree slopes and mountain peaks, and Byrkjedalstunet as a natural base for food, culture and outdoor adventures.
