- For those who want to constantly explore and combine multiple activities

For those who want to explore and combine several activities, take a train ride to Hellvik and cycle along The Old Jæren Railway. If you don't have your own bike, you can rent one from the tourist office. Train tickets from Egersund to Hellvik be purchased at Kolumbus or Go-Ahead (Jærbanen). Look for signs pointing to Den Gamle Jærbanen and cycle all the way back to Egersund. Along the way you'll find lots of great rest areas, stops and detours. Feel free to take a trip up to Launesfjellet for a great view. If you want to stay overnight, you can do so in a caretaker's house on the old Maurholen drive. You will also find many fine place for to look up a tent. The trip is a part of both the Valleys Trail and Kystpilegrimsleia.

About your trip

From Egersund city center, follow Highway 44 towards the station, where you turn left onto County Road 502 towards Eigerøy. Here, a pedestrian and bicycle path and a sheltered road can be used all the way to the intersection at Gamle Eigerøyveien. Cross the road there, and the beautiful walking path reveals itself just after the underpass of Eigerøyveien. There are parking facilities and information signs available. The hike itself is approximately 8.5 km and can be combined with the Vestlandske hovedvei (the main road of Vestland) further from Hellvik.

Geology and nature

The primary rock formation in Magma Geopark is the same as the lighter areas seen on the surface of the moon – anorthosite. The anorthosite in the geopark crystallized in large magma chambers approximately 930 million years ago. It formed in the root zone of a mountain chain similar to the modern Himalayas. As the ice retreated for the last time, the anorthosite was left exposed and bare in the landscape. Read more here.
