Four major city fires between 1817 and 1862 showed that both the available extinguishing water and the extinguishing equipment were insufficient. Egersund's waterworks was built in 1877, and part of the argument in favour of spending money on a waterworks was to provide the town with good fire protection and reduce fire insurance premiums. At the same time, more extinguishing equipment was purchased: Fire sprayers, hose trolleys, fire hoses, fire hooks, etc.
To store all this equipment, the waterworks already had two spraying houses: on the square in front of the church and at the junction between Aarstadgaten and Nygaten. In order to receive a reduction in the fire insurance premium, the waterworks had to be approved by an independent commission, which demanded an additional fire sprinkler at Damsgård by Egersund Fayancefabrik. As a result, a third spraying house was built just west of the Damsgård bridge.
The spraying houses were in use until a new fire station was built in Lervika around 1900. Since then they have been demolished, except here at the intersection of Aarstadgaten and Nygaten, where the city's last spraying house still stands. The building was owned by the municipality until 1993.
"Dr Randlev has applied to rent "Sprøytehuset" in Nygaten as a garage. The city engineer has stated that it cannot be used for either the hearse or the ambulance."
