In the 19th century, Elvegaten was called both "Aagaden" and "Elvegaden".
On 7 June 1859, a town fire occurred here, leaving 60 families homeless. The area was quickly rebuilt with straight and wide streets. But as early as 20 October 1862, a new city fire started in the same area, and almost everything that had been rebuilt burned down again. Fortunately, the new, wide firebreak in Lerviksbakken stopped the fire from spreading westwards in the city.
Elvegaten used to be the main connection from the city centre via Gamleveien and Hestvad bridge to Vestlandske Hovedvei inland. During the 20th century, traffic through the street increased. In 1980, Dalane Tidende wrote that "the Elvegaten junction is one of the most dangerous in the city". Traffic was allowed to continue until 19 November 1986, when Elvegaten and parts of Sandakergaten became pedestrianised. In 1992, the street was paved with paving stones ready for 17 May. At the same time, old cobblestones that had originally been in Storgaten were laid alongside the houses.
"Elvegaten wasn't very long, but Elvegaten was once my world."
Excerpt from "Elvegaten" by Lars Christian Sande.
"Endresen: Let's just include the whole city, then we won't have to go to any more trouble, and then the Ministry can "pick out" what should be exempt.
Aase could be tempted to agree to apply for dispensation for the whole of Damsgaard with the exception of the factories.
The chairman remarked that the law stated that exceptions could be made for the outskirts of the city. The town proper could be counted from Skriveralmendingen to Bager Eges Hus in Elvegaden. The street outside Skriveralmendingen was an outskirt and for the most part, with the exception of the main street, mountains. Here was a convenient place for dispensation.
Endresen thought that this part was and remained City.
Mayor: City! At least I think it should be the West End."
(Extract from Egersundsposten 29.10.1904, representative meeting with mayor Erik Hadland Torjusen about where the compulsory bricklaying law should apply in Egersund town centre).
