Art in context: mining history, modern expression and local stories

Just a short drive from Sogndalstrand is Velferden, an artist-run exhibition centre that explores the relationship between people and the dramatic surrounding mining landscape. Here you'll meet artist Maiken Stene, whose work connects geology, local communities and cultural memory. She shares insights into both her art and the region's close ties to mining, past and present. An inspiring encounter where art, history and the raw forces of nature merge into a holistic experience.

Viewpoint at Jøssingfjord - history written in the landscape

Where nature and industry meet

As you follow the Norwegian Scenic Route Jæren, the road winds down towards Jøssingfjord, revealing steep rock walls, narrow fjord arms and clear traces of centuries of industrial activity. From the viewpoint you can see Titania's drying plant, the fjord landscape and layer upon layer of geological history exposed in the mountainsides. There are toilets here, and the area is planned to be further developed to provide an even better visitor experience.

A powerful encounter with the landscape that has characterised life and work in Sokndal.

A hidden gem: historic tunnel, quiet breaks and dramatic scenery

If you want a short detour, you can go to the old tunnel from 1921, today converted into an atmospheric resting place for cyclists and hikers. Here you'll find a fire pit, simple seating and hooks carved straight into the rock for hammocks. The view of Migarenfossen waterfall adds an extra dimension to the place, creating a nice combination of nostalgia and nature experience. Hammocks can be hired on site.
