Hestvad Bridge is one of six stone bridges worth visiting in Egersund. These six stone bridges are great stops for families with children, hikers and curious travellers alike. You can visit them individually or make it a small tour.
Hestvad bridge crosses Eieåne where it emerges from Slettebøvannet. This is a stone arch bridge with six spans, built in 1851. The bridge was built by Andreas Aanensen in 1851 as part of the connection between the town of Egersund and the Vestlandske Hovedvei. Aanesen is responsible for several bridges in the region from this time period. Hestvad bridge replaced an older bridge that stood downstream of today's bridge. Remains of the original bridge are still visible on Risholmen.
Hestvad bridge was used as a carriageway until 1980. Then a new concrete bridge was completed upstream of the old stone arch bridge. Since then, it has served as a pedestrian and cycle path. It was last upgraded in 2009 with new granite and wrought iron railings.
The bridge can be found along fv. 42, near Egersund.
