Jibbeheia - A massive area of anorthosite

The trip around Jibbeheia takes around 3 hours, but definitely worth it for those who like to experience unique places.

Geology and nature

At the top of Jibbeheia, it is possible to experience the real size of the Helleren anorthosite. This massive area of anorthosite extends to the coast 4 kilometers to the south, extends 6 kilometers towards Rekefjord in the west, and continues 19 kilometers north from Jibbeheia's summit.

The geology of the area has similarities with the geology of the moon. The rock is coarse-grained, massive anorthosite and the entire hike lies in this anorthosite field. Anorthosite is the dominant rock type in Magma Geopark. Although very common in this area, anorthosite is an unusual rock on a global scale. The bright areas of the moon also consist of very old anorthosite. The dark areas of the moon, many of which are circular, consist of the black volcanic rock basalt. The circular shapes are craters where meteorites have crashed into the surface and caused the underlying rock to melt. This has produced basalt. In the Jibbeheia area there are many veins of quartz-bearing crystallised rock, granite. Unlike on the moon, the landscape in Jibbeheia also has many blocks of "alien" rocks that were left behind when the ice retreated during the last ice age. These are called migratory boulders.

Over 90% of the rock anorthosite consists of the mineral plagioclase. If you look down at the foot of Jibbeheia, you can see the size of some plagioclase crystals. If you start counting how many crystals there are in the Helleren body, you will soon realize that there must be many billions of plagioclase crystals around you.

How to get there?
