Trip to Eigerøy lighthouse and accommodation in lighthouse keeper's house is perfect for those who want to enjoy nature in peace and quiet. Come to the car park at Eigerøy lighthouse by car or bike. The bicycle you can hire from the Tourist Office. Book your accommodation at Eigerøy fyr. The area is great for canoeing and kayaking, but remember to check the wave forecast before embarking on a paddle trip in the sea.

Eigerøy lighthouse is located in the centre of the characteristic "moon" landscape that is unique to Egersund and the surrounding area. The rocks in the landscape consist of anorthosite, which was formed deep in the earth about 930 million years ago. Anorthosite is a rare rock on earth, but everyone has seen it anyway - it's anorthosite that you're looking at when you look at the bright fields on the moon.

About your trip

From the train station, follow road rv 42 towards Eigerøy and follow signs to Eigerøy Lighthouse. Due to the narrow road, only cars and minibuses can drive all the way down to the parking lot.

Accessibility: Easy hike that runs partly on gravel roads and partly on marked trails. Pushchairs can be used on the first part of the hike. WC in the car park. Family friendly. Dogs not allowed due to grazing animals.

Duration: 2 hours roundtrip.

Culture and history

Eigerøy Lighthouse was built in 1854 and is the oldest cast iron lighthouse in Norway. It is 32.9 metres high and is one of the most solid lighthouses in Europe. The lighthouse was automated in 1989. Read more about the lighthouse here.
