Ørsdalen & Gudlen

Closed mine in Bjerkreim. 2 alternative tours, partly demanding tour.

Culture and history

The Ørsdal mines can be found in Ørsdalen in Bjerkreim municipality. This area was difficult for mining in itself, but what made it even more challenging was that the mine itself was located on top of the 800 meter high mountain, in the mountain side and in the valley.

The trip to Ørsdalsgruvene takes you on old roads that were used by the miners who had to carry the ore from the mines. This landscape invites reflection on the hard and dangerous work the miners had to do daily.

Geology and nature

Between 1904 and 1954 there were several periods of mining activity in this area. Both molybdenum and tungsten were extracted here. This is a spectacular and unique place. Ørsdalen is isolated, and the only access route is by boat across Lake Ørsdalen or by driving over the mountains.
