The singing stone at Skåra

The stone is located on the farm Skåra, approx. three km from the center of Egersund and was found purely by chance by a former farmer on the farm.

Cultural history and tradition

There are no known legends or traditions relating to this stone. It was discovered when a farmer accidentally hit the stone, which was then lying in a depression. The farmer later retrieved the tractor and dragged it a few meters up the ridge, so that it became more accessible. Bente Anette Skåra, who lives on the farm now, has for several years led horse-riding trips in this area, and she has then shown the Syngjarsteinen to many tourists.

Description

The singjar stone measures 110 x 155 cm, and is approx. 70 cm high. Like many bell stones, a piece of it was once broken off, to determine if it contained metal. The stone is located directly on the mountain, with which it has good contact in the middle. The shape is oval, and the stone ends in a point out into the air on one side. The sound is the best here, even if it has reverberation throughout. The stone has two different notes (F# and G#).

Directions

When you come from Egersund, follow Heggdalsveien for 2.2 kilometres, and turn off Skåraveien on the left, at the sign "0.7 Hestesenter". Drive all the way to the innermost yard, where there is parking by the stables. From the farm, follow the tractor road eastwards for 300 metres, and then the Syngjarsteinen is on top of a hill on the right, about 100 meters from the tractor road.
