About your trip

Parking: From Egersund: follow signs from FV42 towards Stavanger. Parking fee 100 kr.
Accessibility: Easy/moderate tour travelling on both gravel road and path. Marked trails. Family friendly. The trail can sometimes get wet in some areas, so good shoes are recommended. WC in the car park. Open kiosk in the summer season.
Duration: 2 hours including stops. Approximately 2.3 kilometres each way.

Trollpikken became world famous in 2017 when someone decided to cut it down from the mountain where it had been hiding for almost 10,000 years. When the ice retreated about 13,000 years ago, meltwater from the glacier caused cracks to form in the mountains beneath the ice. These cracks were filled with water, and when the water froze, the cracks became larger and deeper. When the ice disappeared, so did the pressure from the ice, and even more cracks had formed. This, together with a bit of luck, has led to the formation of Trollpikken.

Culture and history

The landscape where Trollpikken is located is largely a cultural landscape shaped by traditional farming and animal husbandry. Along the trail, you can see old land boundaries, fences, and lakes. If you choose to walk from Trollpikken down to Egersund, you'll gain a unique insight into how animals and agriculture have shaped the landscape.
