A calm start in traditional surroundings
Byrkjedalstunet is a small hotel rooted in Norwegian history and traditions. With just 31 individually styled rooms in turf roofed log houses inspired by 19th century buildings, the stay feels personal and distinctive.
Begin the day with a traditional Norwegian breakfast made from scratch, including freshly baked bread from the hotel’s own bakery, served in the former dairy at the heart of the property. Craftsmanship and cultural heritage shape the experience, from handmade candles to the quiet outdoor spaces that invite you to slow down before continuing your journey.

Drive to Ørsdalen in Bjerkreim, following narrow and winding roads through striking landscapes, including Gloppedalsura. This vast scree is the largest of its kind in Northern Europe, formed by retreating glaciers more than 10,000 years ago, and offers a powerful introduction to the region’s geological story.
Tracing the footsteps of the miners.
Join a guided hike to the historic Ørsdalen mines, located high in the mountainside and deep in the valley. The walk follows old paths once used by miners who carried ore down by hand, offering insight into the demanding and dangerous work that once took place here. The hike is partly challenging, takes around six hours round trip and follows marked trails. With a guide, it is also possible to enter the mines themselves.
Where tradition and modern architecture meet.
After the hike, spend time exploring the historic buildings at Byrkjedalstunet. Originally a dairy, the site has developed into a distinctive destination where traditional buildings stand alongside bold, modern architecture. Notice the Ovalen mountain hall and Gloppehallen, carved directly into the rock of Gloppedalsberget. Old and new, playful and traditional elements are brought together with respect for the original setting, creating a place that leaves a lasting impression.
End the day with a shared meal.
After a day of nature, movement and exploration, gather around the table for dinner at Byrkjedalstunet. Here, traditional Norwegian dishes are prepared from scratch, often using local ingredients, and served in warm, historic surroundings that invite conversation and shared moments. The pace is unhurried, the atmosphere informal, and the meal offers a natural pause before the evening settles in.
