Attractions in Sokndal

Sokndal offers unique nature experiences and historical attractions - from spectacular formations such as Nesvåghålo and Brufjell to cultural gems such as listed Sogndalstrand and the old mines in Blåfjell. Explore Viking graves, ancient idols and idyllic buildings that offer a vivid glimpse of Norway's history and coastal culture.

Nesvåghålo is a newly discovered gem of a pothole formed by running water under a melting glacier. If there is a lot of sea and wet weather you should not go there as it can be dangerous.

Northern Europe's largest moving boulder weighing 74 tonnes. You can park at the Linepollen bathing area and then walk inland to The rocking stone and the discontinued Blue Mountain Mines.

Cultural-historical, listed wooden buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is the only village in Norway where both the buildings and the cultural landscape are protected. Today, the wooden houses are used as a hotel and are one of Rogaland's most visited destinations.

Blue Mountain Mines was in operation from 1863-1876. The ore from the mine was shipped out to Rekefjord. A railway line was built from Blåfjell to Rekefjord. Today, this is a lovely walking and cycling path.

At the centre of Jøssingfjord lies Two houses under Helleren, which is an old settlement. The houses date from the end of the 18th century/beginning of the 19th century.

Sokndal church was built in 1803 in the Louis XVI style with a harmonious interior and fine rose paintings. The altarpiece, pulpit and baptismal font are from the 1600-1700s.

 

Marked hiking trail up to Odds Mountain with the grave of the viking Orvar Odd. Here there are fantastic views of the North Sea.

 

Located at Myssa, it consists of stone from all the country's municipalities. Great walk from County Road 1 to the cairn with the option of a round trip from the top.

At 184 metres above sea level, Brufjell in Åna-Sira offers fantastic views of Listalandet and the Sokndal coast. NB: Brufjellhålene is located on a ledge with a steep slope that goes straight down into the open sea. The area is known for strong ocean currents and large waves. At Rosland you will find god's head, stone ages and exposure vessels from the Early Iron Age - around 2000 years old. Legend has it that the altar was used for horse sacrifices to the god Frøy.
